Although there are many researchers carrying out plate based assays in Agri-Tech there are still many challenges to automating these assays. Some of these challenges relate to the 3D nature of the samples, such as plant tissue and others relate to being able to detect mobile insects such as aphids and caterpillars an their effects on the plant tissue in this complex well-plate set up. Some pests and environmentally important organisms are too large for plate based assays or are not amenable to miniaturisation and need alternative solutions. Then there is the translatability of screening whole plants and populations in glass houses or fields.
The Automation and Screening in Agri-Tech TIG is a place for non-confidential discussions on assay challenges and needs. Also to be able to address these needs with technology providers to see if together we can speed up and improve Agri-Tech research to work together towards greater food security.
